Young giraffe dies from parasitic infection at Brevard Zoo

DAN: IT’S NOT OFTEN ANIMAL
LOVERS GET TO CELEBRATE THE
BIRTH OF A GIRAFFE. THE POPULATION OF THIS SPECIES
IS IN DECLINE IN THE WILD. THAT’S WHY THERE WAS SUCH
HAPPINESS LATE LAST OCTOBER WHEN
T-BONE WAS BORN TO HIS PARENTS
JOHARA AND RAFIKI AT THE BREVARD
ZOO. AND, IT’S WHY THERE’S SUCH
SADNESS OVER T-BONE’S DEATH JUST
A FEW DAYS AGO.>>IT HAPPENED VERY QUICKLY. DAN: FOR ABOUT A WEEK, T-BONE
BATTLED PARASITES IN HIS
INTESTINES. VETERINARIANS TRIED MEDICATION,
BUT CAME IN ONE MORNING TO FIND
THE GIRAFFE HAD DIED OVERNIGHT.>>WE HAVE NOT HAD SIGNIFICANT
PARASITIC PROBLEMS WITH OUR
GIRAFFES. THIS IS THE FIRST ONE, AND
THAT’S WHY IT CAUGHT US IN A BIT
OF A SURPRISE. DAN: T-BONE’S POPULARITY
EXTENDED BEYOND THE ZOO’S
IMMEDIATE STAFF. IN FACT, HE WAS NAMED BY A
FAMILY THAT HELPED SPONSOR THE
ZOO’S PROGRAMS. THE ZOO HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN
BREEDING GIRAFFES BEFORE. IT’S PART OF A WORLDWIDE EFFORT
TO AID THE SURVIVAL OF THE
SPECIES. THE STATE’S FISH AND WILDLIFE
AGENCY DOES NOT INVESTIGATE ZOO
ANIMAL DEATHS, BUT THE ZOO
ITSELF IS CONDUCTING ITS OWN
PROBE INTO HOW IT FINDS AND
MANAGES PARASITES.>>THAT PROTOCOL IS BEING
REVIEWED RIGHT NOW IN LIGHT OF
THIS RECENT EVENT, AND WE’RE
GOING TO SEE WHAT IMPROVEMENTS
CAN BE MADE TO PREVENT ANYTHING
LIKE THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN. DAN: IN T-BONE’S HONOR, THE ZOO
IS ENCOURAGING CONTRIBUTIONS TO
THE GIRAFFE CONSERVATION
FOUNDATION. IN VIERA, BREVARD COUNTY
