Tawny Crazy Ants – This is the Pest


I think the key with anything when
you’re talking about pest management is always that you start with
identification. If you start with identification and you get that part
right that opens up the key to the biology and the knowledge and everything
else that goes with that. They’re about two to two-and-a-half millimeters in overall length, they’re a reddish orange in color. They’re covered with fine
little hairs or pubescence. They’re very hairy. It doesn’t have any stinger on it
and if you look really closely it’ll have one node between its abdomen and its
thorax or chest, shall we say. These ants will walk in what we call trails but if you destroy them, even if there’s the slightest, then they’ll just start
running around crazy. Crazy ant colony it can be extremely large; they’re what we call super colonies so they’re not territorial, or different colonies don’t
fight with each other, so they kind of run back and forth between colonies, so
they can be in the millions of ants. They are a really serious nuisance pest
and they cause electrical outages. People need to know with this ant in
particular that you cannot control this ant yourself, you have to hire professionals.
