Beneficial Insects You Want in your Garden – The Gardener’s Best Friends!

Beneficial Insects You Want in your Garden – The Gardener’s Best Friends!

Hello friends
In today’s episode We look at some commonly found garden
insects that are actually very beneficial for your garden
So let’s meet some of these friends that you would love to have in your garden
Lets start with honey bees Honey bees play a very important role in pollinating
a lot of plants fruit plants especially citrus plants here in Southern California
And in a typical Southern California garden you will be amazed at how many Honey bees
exist around citrus trees You can see them buzzing around citrus trees
like oranges, tangerines and limes And now lets meet its cousin the Bumble bee The Bumble bee is a much larger bee which has a unique buzzing sound and it pollinates a lot of vegetables like eggplants, cucumbers and squashes The Bumble bees are so important that a lot of green houses actually use Bumble bees to
pollinate the plants that are stored inside green houses and as you can see they look
lovey and they make a very unique buzzing sound as they go around and pollinate all
your vegetables in your garden and as long as you don’t use pesticides in your garden
you will have a lot of Bumble bees buzzing everywhere
Now lets look at Lady bugs or Lady birds This is a very beneficial insect that preys
on all the harmful insects for your plants like aphids and some other insects as well and Lady bugs are beautiful to look at they come in a variety of colors and in the Spring
time and Summer time you will see a lot of Lady bugs in your garden and they would do
a great job at eliminating the bad insects from your garden and if you naturally have
them that’s good if not you could head over to your local garden store and buy some live
Lady bugs as you can see here these Lady bugs are ready to go out and feast themselves on
all the bad insects like aphids, scales and white flies and stuff Now lets look at Earth worms These harmless creatures are not really insects
but they play a very important role in your garden
They convert a lot of organic matter into rich humus and they also play a very important
role in furrowing through your soil making it nice and loose and adding a lot of valuable
nutrients in the soil They also digest small particles of soil like
sand and then excrete them and their droppings called worm castings are very high in nutrients
They play a very important role in decomposing your compost bin as well and converting them
into worm castings and worm tea which will add a lot of nutrients to your soil
So earthworm is definitely the gardeners best friend I hope you enjoyed this episode and i hope you get to see a lot of these beneficial insects
in your garden by not using pesticides you will make sure these nice and beneficial insects
are always there in your garden We will see you again soon
Happy gardening

Termites in the Okanagan

Termites in the Okanagan

Hey there, this is Brendan
Stoneman with Remax Kelowna, and I’m sitting down with home inspector Murray Klingbeil of AmeriSpec. So I wanted to talk to you
about termites in the Okanagan. I know there’s areas of the Okanagan where it’s a little more common to find them, and others not so much. So maybe you can walk us through
some of the neighborhoods to really watch out for them, and talk about the mess
that they can create. – Well my friend, there
are certain neighborhoods where they are a relatively big problem. One of the hot beds for termites, locally, is Lakeview Heights. The Toovey heights area,
Bankhead store area, believe it or not, in that
knoll has termite activity there fairly significant. Peachland has a lot of termites. Here locally, I would say predominantly, the Lakeview Heights area. They’re starting to emerge in many areas where they’ve never been seen before. Let’s start by saying, this is not like the Terminix
commercial you see on TV, where the telephone
poles are falling over, and the decks are falling off the house. A mature colony of termites, approximately 60 to 80,000 members, will eat two feet of one
2×4 a year, that’s it. Takes a long time to do
significant structural damage to your house, but it does happen. Also termites do not live in your house. The termites that we have here are called, subterranean termites, they
live in underground colonies on your property. They only come to your
home to forge for food. They eat cellulose, they like wood, they like cardboard boxes, they like the cardboard skin on drywall, anything that they can get cellulose. So the actual members that
do the damage to your house are the workers. They consume the cellulose,
they go back down to the nest, regurgitate it to feed
the little ones, okay? So unfortunately, if you
have termites it’s expensive to have your house treated. The process is, they drill holes, eight feet deep on 16 inch centers, all the way around the
perimeter of your house, right through your sidewalk,
right through your driveway, right through your patio, and all the way around the
perimeter of the interior. Right through your basement, right through your ceramic tile, right through your wood parquet,
right through your carpet. Then they inject a
chemical that used to be a wonderful chemical called, Dursban, that lasted a long, long time, but that one is no longer
allowed to be used. So the most popular one
is a called, Permethrin. So what that does, is it
makes an envelope of nasty, around your house. So the boys that are
showing up for work tomorrow to eat your house, they say, “Ewey, this house smells bad, “let’s go to the neighbors.” (laughing) so it doesn’t kill the termites, other than the ones that
get trapped in your house, it just makes your house taste bad, and so they go to another
alternate food source. So if there’s anybody in your neighborhood that has termites, it’s a matter of time. – Yeah, oh boy. So now how do you recognize
these signs of problems, or you know, potential
termite issues in your home? – Very good question because
they live underground and they die if they’re
exposed to the atmosphere. They’re small, about the
same size and consistency, color wise, as a grain of rice. So what they have to do,
when they come underground and they hit your foundation wall, when they have to cross that concrete to be able to get into the wood, they have to build what’s
called, a shelter tube. So they use excrement,
materials around the dirt, and they build this little
caramel colored brown tunnel. And so that’s what they use,
and they build it up slowly until they can whittle into your wood. And that’s the Trans Canada Highway, for the nest to there. So a homeowner can look at
the perimeter, look for those. One of the most common areas I see it, is in your utility room, at the crack between the slab pour and
the foundation footing. There’s a gap there. Often times it’s close to the furnace, it’s close to the water heater
so there’s extra heat there. Another place that attracts them, is your freezer, downstairs because of the compressor
vibrating and creating heat it’s another spot for them to come. Another tall tale sign
is, once or twice a year, the termites swarm, to breed
and start new colonies. So if all of a sudden you
got these funny looking flies in your house that
you’ve never seen before, and you’ll see them on window sills, as they’re trying to get
out, or in your utility room, usually on your water
heater, you have termites. – Wow, so then you suspect you
might have a termite problem what do you do? – You call in a reputable
pest control company, and we’re very blessed, we
have some great companies here in town. And they will come and take
a look at the situation. They can ascertain whether
it’s an active colony or if it’s not. And then if they decide that
your house needs to be treated, you got ’em, because you’re
pregnant or your not. (laughing) Then they have at her. – Scary stuff…
– Scary stuff. …but very good information.

How to encase your mattress to protect from bed bugs

How to encase your mattress to protect from bed bugs

Mattress encasements are a great tool in your fight against bed bugs. They make it easy to get a good night’s sleep and protect your mattress. Encasements work by sealing your mattress
and box springs away from the infestation. If there are any bugs on them, they’ll
be contained and if they’re bed bug free they’ll stay that
way. There are many good brands of encasements on the market and they’re available at a wide variety of stores – from online retailers to home good stores. The most important thing, is to make sure
you selected an encasement designed for bed bugs or pests. You’ll also want to make sure you’ve select
the right size for your mattress and box spring. Encasements cover your mattress similar to a large, sealable fitted sheet. Once the encasement is on, you can put your
normal sheets over top and sleep like you usually do. Encasements are also available for your pillows. You should usually leave the encasements on
for about six months, or until you’re able to heat treat your mattress and box springs.

A Potential Cure for Hep C Infection

A Potential Cure for Hep C Infection

A single pill is causing quite a stir after
it was suggested as a potential cure for hepatitis C. I’m Shelby Cullinan with your latest health
news. A new study from Canada found that a combination
of sofosbuvir and velpatasvir (an experimental drug) taken once daily for 12 weeks effectively
cured several genotypes of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in 99 percent of participants. Sofosbuvir
is a drug commonly used to treat HCV infection. Hepatitis C is a viral liver infection primarily
spread through blood-to-blood contact. Today, most people become infected with HCV by sharing
needles or other equipment used to inject drugs. According to the study team, currently-approved
HCV treatments are not equally effective at combating HCV’s different genotypes. That
means testing is required to determine the exact genotype of the virus before treatment
can begin. On the other hand, sofosbuvir-velpatasvir was found to be equally effective at treating
all strains of HCV. Speak to your doctor about new treatments available for your condition.

Growing Geraniums : Protecting Geraniums from Insects

Growing Geraniums : Protecting Geraniums from Insects

Now we’re going to talk about insect problems
in your geranium garden. Now, I am of the belief that mother Earth needs all the help
she can get. In my gardening skills and practices, I practice safe, and or organic gardening
whenever I can. In your home sprayer, take two tablespoons of oil, either dormant garden
oil, or any vegetable oil that you have in your home. In warm water add two tablespoons
of dormant oil, one large tablespoon of any liquid detergent soup, mix well in your sprayer,
and drench your plants under the leaf and on top of the leaf as well. Also, around the
base of your plant, to smother and kill any larvae or eggs that might be hiding underneath
your geranium. Now, you can go and get these products pre-made at your nursery or home
center. This one here is an insecticide, a fungicide, and a matacide. Aphids, white fly,
mites, caterpillars, are just some of the insects you might want to control in your
garden. Again, this copper soap mixed with oil is a great fungicide. Snails, slugs, ear
wigs, a safe bait is available in any home market or nursery. This is both child and
pet safe. Also, be aware that more than one application of this warm soapy mixture might
be needed. Again, as needed, use the spray, it will benefit mother Earth. Now, if this
particular formula does not work, you can bring out the big guns. There’s a whole variety
of chemicals that you can use for your white fly, your mites, your snails, your slugs that
are a little, shall we say, stronger, than the methods that I have given you here. Lastly,
caterpillars love geraniums. There is a couple of varieties of chemicals and mixtures that
you can get. This is a liquid form that fit inside your sprayer. There’s also a powdered
form called dipel. How it works is, the liquid, or the powder, is distributed on the vegetation,
on the leaf. The caterpillar, comes by, chews on the treated leaf or foliage, it goes into
the gut of the caterpillar where it then, shall we say, the caterpillar’s taken care
of. It is both, safe for your children, your pets, and other beneficial insects that you
wish to keep in your geranium garden.

Termite Treatment – Liquid Barrier Treatment Will Kill Termites (GUARANTEED)

Termite Treatment – Liquid Barrier Treatment Will Kill Termites (GUARANTEED)

we’ve talked a little bit about termite
activity and termite damage and today I’m going to talk to you about how to
solve the problem I’m Erika Brewster with us pest protection and we believe
that Termidor and a liquid treatment is the best solution for your home we’ve
had a lot of success with our liquid barrier treatments and we’re going to
talk about how we use it to protect your home from termites at us pest protection
we are a hundred percent liquid company when it comes to termite protection
traditional bait systems although they’re cheaper upfront they’re going to
end up costing more in the long run they basically put pods eight feet apart
around your home in theory what these pods are designed to do is attract the
termites to the pot and then the termite will feed on the pod or feed on the
cellulose debris and then take it back to the colony the problem with these
pods is that they’re eight feet apart that little termite that’s about the
size of a grain of rice will probably make it between the pods so essentially
what a bait system does I’m gonna get this this is a beautiful old-school
piece of memorabilia this is my house let’s say this is a house I’m going to
take our bait systems here we’re gonna put them every eight feet so we have
them around the house and as you can see there’s areas where termites can get
through right so give your big beautiful house and then you have the bait systems
and there’s nothing protecting the home underneath and there’s nothing
protecting the home right against the structure so we have basically target
that blind deaf termites have to hit so rather than the bait system we’re gonna
get rid of bad and then we’re I’m gonna pretend like this ruler right here is
our liquid termite treatment so essentially what we’re gonna do is we’re
gonna pick up your home we’re going to lay down a liquid barrier
treatment on the surface and on its going to bond with the soil it’s gonna
go two to four feet deep within the soil and then we’re gonna place your home
back on top of this liquid barrier so you have a barrier between your home and
the termites because you have a liquid beautiful barrier protecting your home so let me get to the liquid what I know
a lot about we use liquid termiticide called Termidor to protect our customers
homes because we protect what matters most not only the home your best
interest our termite professionals swear by
Termidor we’re gonna treat the the soil around the outside of the home and
create a barrier around the entirety of the home as well as treat the interior
of the crawlspace so that we essentially are picking up your house laying down a
barrier of termiticide and then putting your house back down on it so there’s no
8-foot crevices for them to get through there’s a barrier a liquid barrier that
binds with the soil so that your home is completely protected they’re going to
come in contact with that termiticide that is completely underneath your home
and they’re gonna take it back to their colony because they can’t get to your
house without getting into Termidor hello I’m Brian with us pass we termite
technician to me with a liquid there’s a solid wall you have a solid wall around
your house there’s no space that a term I can possibly get through I prefer the
liquid edges to me it’s a no-brainer it’s a solid wall around your house
protection where you have bait stations you have you know depending on what the
manufacturer is you may be 20 feet 6 feet apart you have that space in
between and to me that’s just like an open gate I prefer to live it I think
it’s a better application it takes a better care of our customers and the
bottom line that’s what anyone would picture our customers take care of thank
