Minute Insecte – Termites

Ants Are Growing Food and They’re Better at It Than We Are

Ants Are Growing Food and They’re Better at It Than We Are

Humans created farming around 12,000 years
ago. But there was another species that independently
created farming waaay before we did…. 55 million years before, in fact. It wasn’t the neanderthal, or any ape, actually…
it was an insect. The lowly ant. Specifically these guys. You’ve all probably seen a clip like this
on a nature documentary, setting the scene of a wild rainforest. But, in the rainforest it’s not really obvious
what they’re doing. Let me put it this way, if you put leafcutter
ants into an ant farm, and watched them build a colony. You’d have an ant farm farm! They don’t farm corn or cows — but fungus!
(we’ll come back to that). Leafcutter ants like the famous Atta cephalotes
literally cut leaves and then carry them on their backs to their colony. But have you ever thought what they do when
they get there? Because the ants don’t eat those leaves
they carry. That’s what I thought they did. Nope. They use them to grow crops… for agriculture! Agriculture, by definition is “the science
or practice of farming, including cultivation of the soil for the growing of crops and the
rearing of animals to provide food, wool, and other products.” Ants are doing this! They dig growing chambers in deep tunnels
to control the temperature, and bring dew and water from the surface to the chambers
to control humidity of their crops — and this is where the leaves come in. The Atta ants drink the sap, clean the leaves,
crush them up, and compost them with their own fecal liquid. And the fungus (basidiomycete type) grows
on this “soil” they create. Then, they harvest bits of the fungus and
use it to feed the colony. Just like human farmers. We’re still new to farming. Wheat is one of the oldest farmed grains,
but it wasn’t until Norman Borlaug bred two special wheats together that humans could
finally use it to feed millions of people! He won the Nobel Peace Prize for that in 1970. But that is n00b science in comparison to
ants who have been using agriculture to feed millions of ants for millions of years. Atta ants have evolved over millions of years
alongside their crops, weeding, watering, and preening. One species of ant has even cultivated a fungal
line that produces high-yields to feed more ants! No Peace prize for them though. The coolest part about this, is some of the
250 species of ant that have evolved agriculture, have also cultivated their crop so much, that
without the ants, it would die. The fungus only exists to feed the ants! The other cool thing? Ants aren’t the only farming species out
there. Termites also are fungal farmers — and here
you thought they were just eating your house, nope they feed some bits to their fungal friends. Damselfish are the only known fish to be agriculturalists,
farming algae for their food. There are even species of beetle and snail
with this practice. But c’mon. Why should we care? Because we’ve only been farming 12,000 years. And scientists are not sure farming is sustainable
practice. We have to feed billions of people, meaning
we need monocultures — one super-plant that can feed lots of people, like the Borlaug
wheat. But growing crops this way can deplete soil
(like with corn) or subject large crops to disease (like with monoculture bananas). The Atta ants and other fungal farmers have
been cultivating monocultures for millions of years. If we can learn how they manage to avoid devastation
by disease, or how they protect their crops from parasites — maybe we could support another
few billion of our own human colony. Aren’t ants awesome? Want to learn more about them? We talked to a bug scientist and you can check
out the interview here. What do y’all think of these mini farmers? Let us know in the comments, and don’t forget
to subscribe, and come back for more videos.

Endosymbiotic Theory

Endosymbiotic Theory

Captions are on! Click CC to turn off. Follow us on Twitter (@AmoebaSisters) and Facebook. There are a lot of amazing theories in science. General theory of Relativity …Atomic theory…The
cell theory. And one thing we want to point out about a
scientific theory is that it’s a lot different from how you might use the word ‘theory’
in your daily life. A scientific theory is not an educated guess. A scientific theory is an explanation of a
scientific event supported by scientific evidence—it must be testable and tested over and over
and over again. And while theories can be changed or disproven,
you do want to realize there are a lot of facts behind them. One of our favorite theories of all time—is
the endosymbiotic theory. We love it, because we just find the events
in this theory to be amazing. The theory gives an explanation for how eukaryote
cells could have evolved from prokaryotic cells that lived in symbiosis. Prokaryote symbiosis meaning—these organisms
lived together. So just a recap from our intro to cells video:
when you think of prokaryote, think of ‘pro’ rhyming with NO. No nucleus. No membrane-bound organelles. Eukaryotes on the other hand—remember “eu”
rhymes with “do” and they DO have a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles. Both prokaryotes and eukaryotes ARE cells
though—and therefore they do have a few things in common that all cells have including
a cell membrane, cytoplasm, ribosomes, and genetic material. But just look at these two cell types and
you will see that one is WAY more simple. So what explanation does the endosymbiotic
theory provide for how eukaryote cells could have evolved from prokaryote cells? A long, long time ago…seriously, a long
time—over 2 billion years ago. There were prokaryotes. Much like there are today. They had been around for a long time. Just as there are in many organisms, there
was variety in prokaryotes. Some of these prokaryotes had photosynthetic
abilities, which means, they could make their food using sunlight energy. These were photosynthetic bacteria. Some of these prokaryotes were bacteria that
had the ability to use oxygen to produce ATP energy. And some of those prokaryotes were larger
and could consume others. Engulfing them. So obviously, they had to be larger. The endosymbiotic theory is that some of these
large prokaryote cells engulfed some of these small bacteria—but instead of those small
bacteria getting digested, some of them remained intact within the large prokaryote and actually
began to live as symbionts. That means, they lived together! For some of these cases, the larger prokaryote
had engulfed the small bacteria that used oxygen to produce energy. This is believed to be the ancestor heterotroph
eukaryote cell. Eventually SOME of these cells then engulfed
the small bacteria that could do photosynthesis in addition and there was more living as symbionts. This is believed to be the ancestor autotrophic
eukaryote. Now it’s time to do a little reveal. We consider the bacteria that used oxygen
to produce their own energy to have evolved into what is now mitochondria. And the bacteria that use sunlight energy
to produce their own food? We consider those to have evolved into what
are now chloroplasts. It is likely that these ancient eukaryotes
had an advantage in their endosymbiosis. It is also likely that the mitochondria developed
first before chloroplasts, because if you remember from our intro to cells video, all
eukaryote cells have mitochondria. It’s just that eukaryote cells that can
do photosynthesis can have both mitochondria and chloroplasts. Now if you remember our beginning about theories,
you may be wondering, where are the facts for this? We’ll give you a few of the facts. First, mitochondria and chloroplasts have
their OWN DNA! Yes! Separate DNA from what is found in the nucleus. Not to mention that their DNA is arranged
in a similar way to prokaryote DNA—specifically, bacterial DNA. The size of mitochondria and chloroplasts
tends to be similar to the size of bacteria and when mitochondria and chloroplasts divide—which
they can divide all on their own, independently—they divide in a way that is similar to how bacteria
divide. So the endosymbiotic theory provides an explanation
for how modern eukaryotes evolved from prokaryotes. There’s obviously more questions you may
want to explore—for example, what about some of the other structures and organelles
in eukaryotes? Keep exploring—secondary endosymbiosis is
a great place to start. One last thing we want to make sure to emphasize. Endosymbiosis isn’t just reserved for a
theory that explains a past event in ancient history. Endosymbiosis is actually happening today
with many other kinds of organisms. One of our favorite examples? The termite! Termites can have prokaryotes that live in
their gut and help them digest wood. And without them? Let’s just say digesting wood won’t happen
so well… Well that’s it for the Amoeba Sisters and
we remind you to stay curious!

St. George Utah Termite Control – Ant vs.Termite

St. George Utah Termite Control – Ant vs.Termite

Hi, I am Wade from Western Pest Control – Your
favorite Southern Utah Pest Control Company. Today I want to about the difference between
a Termite and an Ant when you find them in your home. Sometimes it is hard to find out if the insects
your finding your home if they are ants or if they are termites. There is a couple of little things that you
can do to know if it is an ant or it is a termite. First thing is that ants have a head, then
they have abdomin and then they have a thorax. So they have 3 individual sections to their
bodies. Where a termite will have a head and then
an elongated body, and only have those two sections and not have three individual sections. The second way to tell is an ant will have
two sets of wings on either side, but one of them will be shorter. It will have a long wing and a short wing
on each side. Where a termite will have two wings on each
side that are the same length. That is an easy way to tell if you are looking
at the wings. The third way is what you are finding around
the problem. Sometimes you do not have the insect itself
right there. Sometimes you just have dirt or sawdust or
whatever. Whereas termites, if they are subterranean
termites they’ll come up through the ground and they will bring a little bit of moisture
with them. So it will kind of be muddy in some areas. But they will also have some structure to
their mud tubes. Ants don’t necessarily build that. So if you are finding mud tubes, that is probably
termites. Where if you are finding just dirt and sand
kind of piled there, that is probably ants. The other thing you can look for is we have
drywood termites here which are different than subterranean. Drywood termites will put out little tiny
pellets. They look like saw dust but it is actually,
if you look really close, it will look like little six sided eggs. Only about a thirty second of an inch long. So they are really really small. Those are definitely termites. If it is sawdust or papery or it looks like
it has been chewed up or whatever, that is going to be something else and not necessarily
termites. I hope this has helped. Southern Utah has both termites we do pest
control for and ants we do pest control for – and we do it every day. If you have any questions, you can call us
directly. Our office is here in Washington, Utah it
is 435-673-8300 or you can find us on the web at wpest.com. Hope this helps and have a great day.
