How to film insects on the cheap

How to film insects on the cheap

today I’m going to show you how to film
insects and other small things on the cheap. the first thing you will need is a toy
microscope so I have one here and what you want to do is basically smash it up
with a hammer and you want the lens. hopefully the lens will be plastic if
it’s a toy microscope because if its glass, you’ll have smashed it up. so you take the
plastic lens from here. here’s one I made earlier. you can see it’s actually quite
powerful. and then the next thing you need– blu-tack. you make a ring of it
around the edge like that, and actually as long as you don’t
obstruct the optical axis, it doesn’t matter too much if you get a bit of it
in the…on the actual lens itself rather than just round the edge. now next
take your phone, stick it on like so and then go onto your camera like so. I can now magnify anything and
you basically just move your phone back and forth as if it’s a magnifying glass
because that’s exactly what it is: a magnifying glass. and as you can see, I can now do that. that the next thing you want to do is either turn on your flash or your
torch like that. get something to magnify for example, this Metacanthina
trilobite, and look at that. you just… so that’s all there is to it. all you do:
take a toy microscope, smash it up, take out the lens, stick it on your phone with
some blue tack, and away you go!

AntWorks Illuminated Ant Farm Gel

AntWorks Illuminated Ant Farm Gel

AntWorks provides you
with a revolutionary way to observe the astute
architectural brilliance of nature’s beloved ants. This six and a half inch by
six inch space-age habitat is based on technology
used by NASA. The translucent
gel not only allows you to watch the ants create
their network of tunnels, but also provides the ants with
food and water for survival. Speaking of ants, you
must collect your own or order some from the
enclosed order forms found in your AntWorks
instruction manual. This instruction
manual also includes tons of interesting ant facts. Once you’ve received your
batch of ants, remove the lid and poke four holes
in the gel using the included two and
a quarter inch stick. These holes act as starting
points for the ants to begin tunneling. Next, insert approximately 20
to 25 ants into the container. Larger ones, such as harvester
ants, are recommended. Their size makes them
easier to observe, and their large mandibles
are great for tunnel digging. Avoid mixing different
species of ants, as they could spend
more time fighting than actually creating tunnels. Because the gel is a very
foreign environment for ants, 24 to 48 hours may pass
before any digging occurs. As you watch the time lapse
footage of our ants in action, keep a few things in mind. First, avoid storing the
AntWorks in direct sunlight. Ants prefer shade, so put
them in a room temperature between 50 and 74 degrees
Fahrenheit if possible. Second, the gel consists of
more than enough food and water for your ants to survive. In addition, ants
require little oxygen, so the small holes on
the lid are sufficient. However, opening t lid for
a few seconds every week wouldn’t hurt. Finally, ants generally
have a lifespan of one to three months. Some may live longer, and some
may expire before a month. Once the ants have begun digging
and their intricate tunnels begin to form, you can study
their unique, intelligent behavior up close. Their network of tunnels is
nothing short of amazing. AntWorks comes with a
magnifying glass, allowing you or your child to
observe specific ant mannerisms unable to be
seen by the naked eye. The included extreme
zoom lens lets you get even closer
to the action. AntWorks also comes with
a 120 volt A/C adapter. Once plugged in, the adapter
powers the bright blue LEDs attached to the base
of the container. The resulting
illumination beautifully highlights the
tunnels in the gel. Talk about a cool
nightlight for your kids. All in all, AntWorks
provides you and your children with an
entertaining and educational peek into the lives of nature’s
hardest working insects– ants. AntWorks– available

iNFECTiON ZOMBiE TAG at our NEW HOUSE!

(thumping) (zombie groaning) (laughter) (crashing) (laughter) – Whoa. (giggling) – I’m a doctor zombie. (zombie-like groaning) – Everyone run for your lives, this doctor’s been tagged! Oh no, oh shoot, zombie, zombie, zombie. – Hi SOTY family!
– Hi SOTY family! – In today’s vlog we’re
playing infection tag in our new house. Before we get started,
give us a big thumbs up and subscribe to our channel. – In infection tag there’s a zombie. – A doctor. – And SOTY-sins. – Alright, so the rules of the game are the main zombie is trying to tag everyone. If you get tagged by the zombie, you turn into a zombie. – The doctor’s trying to heal everyone that turns into a zombie. – I’m a zombie. – The doctor can heal
anyone but the main zombie. – After five minutes, we see who wins. – It’s either the main
zombie, or the doctor. We’ll see. (papers rustling) – This one. SOTY-sin. – Doctor. – Doctor! I mean, doctor. – SOTY. – Zombie. I’m the zombie. – She sounds like Dracula. – Zombie. – I think she’s a SOTY-sin. But there’s only one left so I don’t need to close my eyes. I’m a SOTY-sin. – I’m gonna start healing people. – And I’m gonna start
turning guys into zombies. You guys have 30 seconds
to hide, starting now. (all yelling) – Blake, we have 30 seconds
to find a good hiding spot. All right doctor, are you
ready to save all of us if we get tagged? – [Doctor] Yes. – Hey. – [Payton] I won’t get tagged. – Stephen’s gonna get tagged fast? Payton, where you gonna hide? – I dunno. Wait, can we move around? – Oh man, we can move around. I still think we need a good spot to hide. Doc, you can’t hide with us. OK, get behind me, I’ll block for you. Hey, if they touch me, you heal me quick. This is our strategy. Wish us luck. Blake, do you think
everyone’s hidden well? – All right guys, 30 seconds is up! – And Taylor has five
minutes to try tag everybody, Ready? Set? Go! (boy yelling) – Okay they’re coming, shh. Hee hee hee, our secret weapon. (groans) (girl giggling) (crashing) – Whoa! (laughing) (zombie groaning) (giggling) (zombie groaning) Zombies can’t open doors. (zombie groaning) (girl screams) You’re a zombie. (both girl zombies groaning) You’re a zombie. – Shh shh shh. (zombies groaning) Uh-oh, the zombies are, don’t do it.
(zombies groaning) Don’t touch me, zombie. Argh! Ugh, I’m a zombie. (zombies groaning) You’re supposed to touch me. I’m not a zombie anymore. (zombie groaning) Touch her, touch her, quick! – Gotcha. – You’re safe, let’s go. Come on, doctor. Ha ha ha, oh no! (zombie groans) The zombie found me! (yelling) (zombie groaning) (kids screaming) (zombies groaning) – I’m a doctor zombie. (groans) – Everyone run for your lives,
the doctor’s been tagged! Oh no, oh shoot, zombie! Zombie, zombie! (panting) Zombie. Zombie. Don’t do it, please. (zombie grunts) Ehh, I’m a zombie. (doctor zombie groaning) (distant yelling and thumping) We’re zombies. (girl screaming) (girls giggling) (Dad zombie groaning) (girls laughing) Ugh, zombies. – I’m a zombie (groans) (zombie groaning) – [Mom] Ten more seconds! – [Dad] Zombie. (funky music) – Time is up! – I was hiding here the whole time. – I think the zombie wins this round. – Time for round two. (paper shuffling) I got zombie. (paper shuffling) – I got SOTY. I’m a SOTY-sin. – [Taylor] Doctor. – Doctor. – And we’re SOTY-sins.
– And we’re SOTY-sins. – The doctor’s in town. Time to write some prescriptions. Can you see up my nose? The zombie dad will never find me. (chuckles) – Start the clock, because
this zombie is ready. On the mark, get set, here I come. (zombie groaning) – Oh! Zombie, zombie! (zombie groaning) – Zombie. (zombies groaning) – [Doctor] Saved, healed. (zombie groaning) – It’s scary in there. (zombie groaning) – She doesn’t see me. (shoes shuffling) Or she does, bye! No! (girls scream) (zombie groaning) Oh shoot! (Doctor panting) I’m alive. I didn’t get tagged. (zombies groaning) Oh shoot, you found me! (zombies groaning) (girl screams) (feet stomping) – You have one minute, let’s do this. – You’ll never catch me zombies. (zombie groaning) (girl screams) Come on, come on, guys! (zombies groaning) I got tagged, I’m a zombie now. Zombie (groans) (zombie groaning) – [Dad] No, I thought I was safe. – [Mom] You got everybody in just the right amount of time. (funky music)
(rhythmic zombie groaning) (toddler babble) – That is truly terrifying. Hopefully you guys enjoyed
Infection Tag at our new house. – Our question for the day is would you rather be the
zombie, or the doctor? – Or a SOTY-sin? – Before we end this video,
check out our basement tour. (toddler babble) (kids laughing) – All right guys, so several weeks ago, we played a game in our upstairs, and we did a little tour,
and kind of showed you the areas upstairs and rooms
and what they’re gonna be, and I told you that pretty
soon we would be doing a tour of our downstairs, and guess what? Today’s the day! – And I’m helping. Here’s our fancy stairway
to get downstairs. (upbeat music) Can you tell I’m trying to be fancy? – Careful, you may break a hip doing that. – And here’s one of many
closets in our house. It’s where I can put all my toys, because this is my room. Are you ready for it? – [Mom] I’m ready for that
bug that’s right behind you. – What is that? – [Mom] We have our first house guest! It’s gonna join Taylor in her room. – Eew, you’re not welcomed. But you guys are welcome in my room. And this is where the princess sleeps. My bed’s gonna be right here, I think. Mom, where you gonna put my bed? And this is my closet,
slash my sisters’ closet. – They have conjoining closets, so Taylor can walk through her closet, and then turn around and
walk into her sisters’ room. – It’s big. – This is where Peyton, Jordyn,
and Parker will be sleeping. They’re gonna have a humongous
built-in bunk bed here where they all can sleep together. – And this is where a desk is gonna go. – So everyone can do their homework. (Taylor gasps) – Good thing I don’t have that in my room. And this is Stephen’s room. Stephen, your room is a disaster. Good thing this broom is here. It’s always so messy. This is the craft room, where my mom can spend all her time. – Nope, no I’m not. – Fine, I’ll craft then. This is Parker’s and Blake’s
special fun room, whoop. It goes on forever down here. And it comes out the other side. – All right guys, it’s
a little dark in here, but this is a laundry room downstairs, and I just wanted to
show you guys the tile. It is my favorite. It’s the same tile that’s
upstairs, and I love it. – Interesting choice, Mom. I don’t know if I like it. – It doesn’t matter, I like it. This is our closet, where we’re gonna put all of our games that we have, so that we can grab games and come out into our living room
and play games together as a family by the fireplace. – And this is the theater room. – All you have to do is follow the red brick road to the theater room. It’s awesome! And guys, that is pretty
much the basement, minus a few things that we
are keeping secret, shh. – You just have to wait and
find out what those are. – But thank you guys for
watching today’s video. Make sure you subscribe. – Comment. – Give us a big thumbs-up. – And we’ll see you guys tomorrow. Bye!
– Bye (upbeat guitar music)
