How to Tell If You Have Termites

How to Tell If You Have Termites

The Subterranean termite is the most common
termite found in the United States, and can cause serious damage to your home or structure. Unlike drywood and formosan termites, subterranean
termites colonize underground and can be hard to detect. Subterranean termites are found throughout
most of the contiguous United States and Hawaii. Here is how you can identify and check for
signs of subterranean termites. Like other termite species, subterranean termites
has a caste system of workers, soldiers, and reproductives. Workers are around an eighth of an inch long,
and typically a cream color. They are responsible for eating wood to obtain
cellulose. The majority of the colony are workers. Soldiers are around a quarter of an inch long;
easily identified by their large rectangular head and their large mandibles. They protect the colony. And then there are alates, also known as swarmers. They are about half an inch long and black
in color, and have four wings of the same length. These matching wings are the best way to distinguish
swarmer termites over flying ants. The alates are responsible for creating new
colonies, so if you see these, it can be a good sign that you have a heavy infestation. You can also look for their discarded wings
around your home or structure. Another sign is mud tubes. Subterranean termites create mud tubes that
act as pathways for them to move back and forth from their nest to your structure. Mud tubes are commonly found around wood structures,
foundations, or any structural supports. The termites will travel from their colony
in the ground, through the mud tubes, up the foundation and into the structure. They will do the same for pier and beam homes
and buildings, as well. Also check for damaged wood around your property. You can use a screwdriver or another sharp-ended
object to probe wood for termite galleries. Subterranean termites create elaborate tunnels
and chambers as they chew through the wood. Like drywood termites, the tunnels will be
going with the grain, not against. Subterranean termites can cause considerable
damage to your property, but you can control them easily yourself with professional pesticides
and equipment from Solutions Pest and Lawn. Be sure to visit our website to get your products

Introduction to Insect Anatomy

Introduction to Insect Anatomy

Hi Guys. I am Trisha with Insectopia here to talk to
you about basic insect anatomy. But, before we get into insects. Let’s talk about how we get there. This is a picture of all kinds of life on
Earth. There are 6 basic classifications that separate
all plants and animals in the world. Think of each of these classifications as
filters that narrow down your search. This starts with Kingdom: Animalia. This includes all animals, yes, including
insects. Phylum: Arthropoda. This includes insects along with millipedes,
centipedes, spiders, scorpions, and ocean creatures with exoskeletons. All arthropods have an exoskeleton that they
molt out of to grow. Class: Hexapoda. These are the insects! All of them have 6 legs, 3 body parts, and
1 pair of antennae. There are 4 more classifications that narrow
it down past insects until you get to one species. These are: Order. Family. Genus. Species. It is time to build our insect. We mentioned that all insects have 3 body
parts: head, thorax, and abdomen. On the head, we will be talking about mostly
sensory organs. Insects have compound eyes that have many
small lenses, these eyes are used for both color and movement. They also have ocelli, these are individual
lenses and are mostly used for light sensing. Having a hard time remembering ocelli? Think of this story. This person illegally imported butterflies
into the US and is now serving hard time for his crimes. He has a barred window that looks out at a
cement wall. But, he can still see the light from the sun
and the darkness of night. His “cell” “eye” can only see light. This cell window is equivalent to the ocelli. Also on the head, we have antennae that insects
can use for smelling, tasting, touching, and hearing the world around them. This makes antennae a very important tool
for insects. Insects also have mouth parts. There are many kinds of mouthparts because
insects have a variety of diets. They can have chewing mouthparts like in beetles
and caterpillars, straws like in butterflies and moths, or sponges like in flies. Our insect is getting a chewing mouth part. Let’s move onto the thorax. The thorax is all about movement. All 6 legs are on the thorax along with either
1 or 2 pairs of wings. Insects also have different adaptations to
their wings. Beetles will have a hardened first pair of
wings that are used as a shell instead of used for flying. These are called elytra. Grasshoppers and cockroaches also have a modified
first pair of wings. Their first pair of wings are leathery in
feeling and are opaque. These are called tegmina. Dragonflies and bees have membranous wings
that are very thin, transparent, and you can see the wing veins. Of the wing adaptations that we are talking
about today, the flies have the most peculiar wing adaptation. They are the only ones that have a single
pair of wings. Their second pair have adapted into appendages
that help them balance and manipulate their flight. These appendages are called halteres. Our insect has membranous wings. There aren’t very many things that are attached
to the abdomen because most of the exciting things are happening inside of it. The respiratory system, digestive track, and
the reproductive organs are all in the abdomen. Insects are really interesting in the fact
that they actually breathe through window-like holes their abdomen called spiracles. I believe in spiracles, on
the sides of bugs, that’s where they breathe. These appendages are the insect’s cerci. They are for predator evasion and detection. They can appear to be insect antenna to an
unsuspecting predator. Female insects will lay eggs out of their
abdomen, but sometimes they need a special egg-laying device. For example, if they need to lay their eggs
into wood. This egg laying device is called an ovipositor. These are examples of body parts that we have
talked about in this presentation. Thank you for listening! In the comment section below, let us know
what your favorite insect is! Make sure to like, comment, and subscribe
