Drawing Insects · 30 Ways to Fill a Sketchbook · SemiSkimmedMin

Alright you lot, welcome back, hows everyone
doing. For today’s sketchbook page I decided to
take a look at insects, study their forms and colours. I feel like insects are quite overlooked in
like go-to art practices. Animals and flowers are quite common and we
can all see how looking at them and learning about them, how to draw them can broaden your
art skills and knowledge in a way that could always come in handy. Flowers are great for colours and natural
forms, they’re so diverse in their shapes, there’s so much you can learn from studying
them, so much that you can add to your inspiration stores to add flare to your next drawing either
with a literal flower or just your use of colour and shape. And it’s the same thing with insects. They are so diverse in every single way, it’s
like a whole new world of possibilities in structure and colour. When you start taking a closer look at them
its really intriguing and inspiring. I’m gonna have to get a book of insects
soon cos they really are just an unlimited source of ideas, really just captivating and
unique. So to get the colours across for this one,
I decided to take a chance and use my copic markers, I don’t use them very often and
I have a set of only about 20 colours so my skills in really delivering the essence of
what was drawing may have been a bit limited. But I felt like markers would be the best
way to get across that iridescence and sometimes translucent look of the body of an insect. And it actually worked out pretty well. My marker technique obviously could do with
some work but once I added the outlines it really pulled everything together and had
just the vibrant effect I was hoping for. For whatever reason, for the first couple
of drawings I re-outlined them over the original pencil drawing with pencil again and then
went over that with pen. I don’t know why I didn’t go straight
over it with pen but eventually I clicked on and stopped with the extra pencil step. So yeah, markers are another thing I’ll
just have to add to my list of things to work on, this sketchbook series has really given
me so much to be getting on with. It’s like a snowball effect. I had really hit a wall with my art before
I started this and now there’s just this growing momentum to create more and more and
try even more things. A lot of people have been commenting recently
about how close we are to the end now. I personally have mixed feeling about it. Part of me is really happy that I’ve actually
managed to commit to it and get through it, I’ve been drawing and filming and editing
more than I ever have before and it’s just been a great way to prove to myself that I
actually can do it if I set my mind to it. I’ll kind of be relieved when it’s over
cos it means I can sort of get back into a normal routine that isn’t just about these
videos, I can find time to work on bigger pieces, work on some different video ideas. I’m also kind of dreading it because, it’s
just gone really well and I don’t want to fall back into my old ways. And I don’t really know what I’m gonna
do, like what my next step is, to keep the momentum up. I’m sure at some point I’ll do something
like another 30 ways to fill a sketchbook, but not for a while I don’t think. So yeah, mixed feelings, but generally I’m
feeling good about it, kind of ready to keep moving forward. I’m curious to know what kind of content
you guys would be interested in seeing after this. Obviously I’ll be doing speed-paintings
and things but yeah… I dunno. Any suggestions really. The butterfly took a little while, trying
to get the details of the wings right. I expected the butterfly to be my favourite,
cos of the colours and just you know cos butterflies are always so beautiful, but I actually think
the first one was my favourite, the wasp kind of one. I just think it looks quite striking. The last couple of drawings were quite quick,
I think I was getting into the swing of things by that point and the both had pretty simple
designs. And I’ve pretty much run out of things to
talk about so I’ll leave you to enjoy the rest of the video, thank you all so much for
watching, and I’ll see you in the next one. Bye!

  3. I LOVEE THIS!! U never really see people draw insects cause people are grossed out by them. But you just proved how beautiful they can be with their jewel tone colors.
I will miss this series when it is over, but i am very excited to see whats to come when it is 🙂 love your videos!!!

  4. I love your videos so much! You're amazing at what you do and I love your voice, it's really relaxing to listen to, but sometimes it gets difficult to hear because it's so soft. But I really, really love your videos, especially this series!

  5. Gorgeous!! Makes me wish I liked bugs. We get these things called Spider Crickets. Imagine a spider that can jump when you tried to kill it. Ewwwww! Lol.

  6. You are amazing. Love your art. I am wondering if you have a spotify account ? I really admire your music taste and i would like to follow you on there.

  7. You have so much amazing content with this series idek what to suggest! Honestly, you're so inspiring i'd watch anything haha

  8. how about doing a series where each artwork has a single predominant/focus colour but similar subject matter (eg: all portraits). So one would be mainly blue, another red, and another black. Does that make sense?

  9. wow , did you use a reference for that butterfly!? it's absolutely amazing. definitely my favorite. so pretty. I'm gonna miss this series when it's over 😭.

  10. you could do an "Art journey" series. your story as you learned art that is also tutorials on how to draw/paint/improve.

  11. I will miss this series greatly but you're only gonna get better from here on out so that's just as exciting to see :)))

  12. I love all of your videos so much! One thing that I've seen other artists on Youtube are going out and drawing what they see. Like at a museum or at a botanical garden, or just any location of your interest 🙂

  13. I honestly love this series, i feel growth in myself watching these videos. Maybe post them twice a month? idk. it would be a shame to see it just end forever. I like the idea of doing another "30 ways" series as well. i think that gives us something to look forward to. kinda like waiting for your fav tv show to start up again

  14. I only subscribed to you at the very beginning of this series but I have loved it. It's a lot different than the content of the other youtubers I subscribe to, but I understand that you want to go back to a regular schedule! It would probably be cool to see more of this once a week, interspersed with other videos (like a Sketchbook Sunday kind of thing, with regular videos on another day(s) of the week)

  15. maybe since its coming up to spring, you could do an environmental drawing series. sort of like a vlog/speed paint in one, to whichever location?

  16. I would love to see a new series in which you study an artist you like and try to recreate either one of their pieces or one of your own recreating their style where you post either weekly or every 2 weeks

  17. These are so stunning and striking and you are so damn calming to listen to! I'd say doing something like this every 6months could work well. There are a drawing a day challenges for a week if you can't commit a full month. I'd love to see some sort of story board or comic after your character design video too and maybe you could try out some more studies of bodies. There's a YouTube channel called croquis cafe and they have videos of models doing short poses and long poses and it's really helped me to develop my understanding of the human anatomy. I hope that you still upload to YouTube regularly as I've enjoyed getting to know you so much through these videos. Keep up the good work! Xx

  18. (first of, sorry if you've talked about this before, I'm quite new to your channel!) one question I have is about reference – do you use any and if so, how exactly? These drawings seem so complex that it'd be amazing/almost impossible for you to get it all from memory!

  19. A study of the same sketch, use every different medium you have.. i.e. the butterfly in watercolor, copic, gouache, charcoal, oil, acrylic, then on white paper, black paper, medium tone, etc.
Sometimes we struggle to even get started in wondering what medium and background we should use 🙂
(Also, it has to be something you LOVE if you'll draw it many different times 🙂 )

  20. I love drawing insects. We had to do 50 things for an art project. I collected 50 specimens and did 50 drawing to scale 2:1 it took a while haha

  21. Really, really beautiful! I love drawing insects, but never focused on beetles before; I might give it a go 🙂 Also, have you thought about doing a page drawing minerals and crystals? The form is so interesting and challenging to draw!

  22. You should get a book of birds too! I have a massive book full of big photographs of birds from all over the world. There are some really gorgeous birds out there. 🙂

  23. I love that you draw a variety of things. A lot of my other favorite YouTube artists draw girls and girls and girls and girls. They're still fun to watch, but your buildings, landscapes, and bugs are a very refreshing change.

  24. Id like to see you revisit your ideas and retry them. Like take your least favorite drawing or the hardest one and try it again with more practice and more time

  25. ive been doing watercolour studies of moths and butterflies all week so it was a nice surprise seeing this video posted! your work is so beautiful i will definitely miss this series when its over

  26. I have to say I got really inspired by this series, n fact I am doing the 30 ways myself in order to jumpstart my art. Thanks for the inspiration!

  27. I think it's really cool how you did the all in a birds eye view so it kinda looks like the bugs are there.. or rather.. a.. BUGS eye view!! hahaahahhahkillmehahahha

  28. Could you please do a video on patience? It sounds kind of stupid or wacky but I sometimes struggle with my patience when practicing art. Do you run into a lack of patience? If so, how do you manage that? ❤

  29. I'm so inspired! Do your Copic markers bleed through paper? I want to get some for myself, but I don't know if I need a certain type of paper in my sketchbook or not. Thank you!

  30. Are you kidding me?! Your coloring skills using your markers are impeccable. I'm a little bit sad that this series is ending 🙁

  31. Has anyone else realized that designing a tattoo should of been episode 8 not episode 9? And I agree that this is a really good series

  32. These videos are so inspiring. I struggle with having a cohessive style because I jump around a lot with mediums and subject matter and drawing style (or painting style or even embroidery). Does anyone have some advice for pulling it all together? When I look at my Instagram feed @flirtt00 I get so annoyed at how different everything is. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!!

  33. Wow! I was worried I'd found a loud, general skill level artist again, but this is amazing! You're amazing! Subscribing now!

  34. These are stunning! What was the yellow you used? I've been looking for a good all rounder and the one I got was a tad too vibrant and warm.

  35. It's true, drawing insects opens up a whole new world. If you're interested, check out woolly aphids. We have them where I live in the summer, and they're just a delight. They float around like little blue fairies/tiny living clouds. And they're totally harmless, too. If they land on you they'll just hang out with you for a bit. 🙂 Anyway, thanks for posting this vid! Sorry I'm commenting on so many of your vids at once, LOL. Have some free time so I'm just binge-watching some of your stuff. Cheers! <3 P.S. — Love your use of color! 😀

  36. is this sketchbook a moleskine ? I got one, but my copics go straight trough it so it makes that I can't use the back of the pages on which I use the copics…. Any tip for that ?

  37. hi! was just wondering where you find reference images? do you take them from encyclopedias of just from google? x

  38. I love this serie so much, I was not feeling really good about my art recently, but it gave me a lot of inspiration and I feel like I'm ready to start experimenting again 💕

  39. Even if you just draw Whats on your mind is still worth watching. Just to keep you imspired. Don't Stop doing.your art adventure and keep sharing!

  40. wow! your video is really cool! I love it. I love the way you draw in the paper and the colors that you use to draw the insects.

  41. Beautiful drawings! Love the idea of laying in the color and then drawing over with outlines. Great insights. Thanks for the inspiration! 🖌

  42. I realize that this video is a year old now but so very beautiful mam.💓I would love to buy prints of these! I have the perfect spot in my home for them! Hint, hint…😊🎨

  43. The 8 people who disliked this video are- .. 🤮 your ideas a great you just earned a new sub! I hope you font mind but I'm gonna draw insects all the time
